Summary: How much of yourself would you give away to save the life you promised?
Luke Miller had the blueprint for a perfect future memorized: a rising software engineering career, a home with a yard, and marriage to Nikkie, the woman who stood by him through years of late nights and empty cupboards. But when tech layoffs wipe out his industry overnight, the blueprint collapses. Eight months later, Luke is marooned in a cramped apartment staring down automated rejection letters while Nikkie works grueling double shifts at the hospital to keep them from being evicted. Every unpaid bill and sympathetic look from friends feels like an indictment of his failure to provide.
Desperate to break the spiral, Luke finds an impossible lifeline: an experimental clinical trial for a private biotech venture named NeoStar. The bi-weekly payout of twenty-five thousand dollars is enough to clear every debt, pay for Nikkie’s advanced degree, and put an engagement ring on her finger. The catch is buried beneath terrifying legal boilerplate—a non-disclosure waiver warning of extreme cellular mutation, physiological strain, and a high probability of death. With nothing left to lose, he signs his name.
The compensation is real, but so are the consequences. After the first injection, the changes begin: Luke is two inches shorter. Then four.
As the doses continue and his height steadily drains away, the world morphs into an unforgiving gauntlet where door handles, car pedals, and street curbs become towering barriers. The shift inside their home is even more devastating. The partnership Luke risked everything to preserve dissolves as his independence vanishes, turning him from an equal provider into a dependent in need of a guardian. Bound to an airtight contract they cannot afford to break, and with fellow test subjects vanishing under lethal corporate neglect, Luke is trapped in a race against his own diminishing stature.
When the world is built to look down on you, how small can you become before you disappear completely
