When the modern age came to an end, it ended in a fierce tide of magic and change that reshaped the world in unexpected ways. Deep in the arctic a rift opened and unleashed what could only be described as a fantasy invasion onto the world. While magic changed the world around us, reshaping the terrain and changing life to better fit its unknowable goals. It was the foreign species that emerged from the rift that sealed the fate of our flawed but peaceful age. Dwarfs ventured into our world and sought the mountains and all the deep secrets they hid within the earths cold stone. Elves, breaking every rule in the book about what we thought they would be like, waged war upon all they came across. Taking land, resources, people and building fortresses that Terra-formed the land they conquered with magic under their control. Orcs clans took to fighting anyone they could, humans, elves, Fae, dwarfs, beast folk. Using a outdated steampunk technology to weaken us further while the elves slaughtered our people. Then humanity began to change as well, some of us grew wings like that of birds and insects and formed groups out in the world. Others took on traits of other animals from all over the globe, reptiles, mammals, fish. A few even became more plant than man. The most terrifying of the changes, were giants emerging from humanity's remnants, eager to hunt all they deemed lesser as food and roam the world. Where there was once billions of people, nations with unique cultures, tense but stable lines dividing it all, now stands a few civilizations trying to hold on and fight off what could eventually become our extinction. There are those who say humanity was at the top of the world, though it wasn't true, we now find ourselves falling further down the long hole to the bottom of the barrel.
