Great story!  A very nice ending for our intrepid scientist as well.

You mention a possible follow up story, might I make a suggestion?  Perhaps the scientist had enough foresight that the portal would follow his coordinates, should he not make it back in time to return.  A "fail safe" setting so to speak.  Now the portal would be focused upon Bunny's body (perhaps not an exact location, as that would mean the portal would land directly upon the scientist's body, had he survived.  Rather an "in the vicinity" setting that would allow him to find it and return, though already to late for him.)  This way any person entering the transportation device would arrive at any arbitrary place on or in Bunny's body.

Perhaps after the scientist's long disappearance, his house and belongings are sold off, and the metal doorway is sold for reuse in some public building; still fully operational.  Occasionally powering up to open the portal for anyone or multiple bodies passing through.

Just a thought.  Anyway, a very enjoyable story.
