Wow. I think this is one of the more powerful (if you'll excuse the unintended pun) chapters that you've written, if only because its silences speak volumes. Eliot's gentle exploration of Amber, and the emotions it invokes really touched me to my core. After all of the dehumanizing treatment she has faced (a lot of it self-inflicted, sure) it was actually moving to see her go from worrying about not resting her balls on Eliot's palm to kissing his forehead in gratitude. It was, and has been quite a journey.
And your portrayal of county-level mental health programs betrays some personal connection to the system. Brilliantly portrayed.
I'm sure Amber's reprieve will, as with nearly every good thing that's happened to her so far, likely be brief. But now you've grounded her and the story, so we're better able to deal with what has to come next. Can't wait to read more of act II.
Author's Response:
Thank you for the review!
I'm probably going to be taking a couple of weeks off, as writing at such a grueling pace has taken something out of me. But yeah, I'm super proud of this chapter. I think it's the first one, aside from the penultimate Megan chapter of Act I, that's one continuous scene. I think Eliot and Amber deserve their respective dues.
On the other end, I was worried that the hospital chapter didn't stay in one place for long enough, but I didn't want to dote too much on it. I'm really trying to keep the plot from spinning too far away from the interaction between Amber, her mom, her therapist, and Cathy. I'm trying hard to make this as dark as possible without falling out of the grey area of human experience.
