Author's Chapter Notes:

We meet our characters, and things start to get... spooky.

In a dimly lit, rundown classroom nestled in a forgotten corner of Birchwood High, a sense of eerie anticipation hung heavy in the air. The Occult Club's core members, besides one, bound together by their shared fascination for the macabre and supernatural, gathered around the ancient book that lay open before them, its worn pages exuding an aura of mystery.

Emma, the group's charismatic leader with her lustrous brunette hair, accentuated by a striking white streak that fell gracefully behind her ear, possessed an innate ability to command attention. As her pristine emerald eyes scanned the cryptic contents of the book, she felt a surge of excitement coursing through her veins. The opportunity to delve into the secrets held within the weathered pages before her was an adventure she couldn't resist.

Beside Emma, Sasha sat eagerly, her eyes alight with curiosity and her heart pounding with anticipation. With her wild tangle of vibrant red curls and a mischievous spark in her eyes, she had an uncanny knack for unearthing hidden treasures in the most unexpected places. It was she who had stumbled upon the mysterious tome, buried deep within the dusty attic of her grandmother's house. Entranced by its spooky and witchy appearance, Sasha couldn't resist bringing it to the attention of her fellow club members, eager to unravel its enigmatic secrets.

Michael sat across from Sasha, his shimmering blonde hair and blue eyes contrasting greatly from his dark clothing, a black hoodie with graphic band designs and ripped black jeans. He was just as intrigued as Emma, leaning over the table to get a better look.

Allie, a friend of Sasha's attending her first meeting, was a quiet and observant presence among the group. With her chestnut hair gently cascading down her shoulders and her warm hazel eyes, she had a peaceful vibe to her that put the group at ease. Allie's quiet and contemplative nature made her a keen observer, taking in every detail of the room and the interactions unfolding before her.

Only one seat was left unoccupied in the room, and the recurring members new it belonged to the ditzy goth girl of the group, Amanda, for whom the occult was a lifestyle. If she was in the room with the group, she'd surely draw their attention with her stark black clothing and makeup.

Growing restless from the prolonged absence of Amanda, the members of the Occult Club exchanged glances filled with a mixture of impatience and curiosity. They couldn't delay their exploration of the ancient tome any longer; its eerie allure had become too enticing to resist. With a collective nod, they decided to begin their examination without her.

Emma, always the proactive one, leaned closer to the book, her fingers trembling with anticipation. The pages, weathered and yellowed with age, were filled with intricate symbols and cryptic incantations. As her eyes traced the lines of text, she couldn't help but feel a surge of energy emanating from the ancient words. It was as if the book held a dormant power waiting to be awakened.

Sasha, equally captivated by the book's mystique, reached out tentatively to touch its worn cover. Her fingertips brushed against the faded leather, and a jolt of energy coursed through her body

Michael, his curiosity piqued, traced his finger along the intricate illustrations adorning the margins of the pages. Each intricate detail seemed to come alive beneath his touch, pulsating with an otherworldly energy. He couldn't help but wonder about the origin and purpose of this enigmatic tome. What ancient knowledge and forbidden secrets did it hold within its aged pages?

Allie, quietly observing the group's interactions, leaned in closer to catch a glimpse of the text. The symbols and incantations danced before her eyes, igniting a spark of curiosity within her.

"This is crazy Sasha, you said your grandma had this?" Emma giddily asked.

"Yeah, it was in the attic. They sent me up there to grab some old pictures and I found it in a box with some other old books. Something about it just stuck out to me…" Sasha replied, beaming at her contribution to the group.

"Yeah, nice find Sasha!" Michael added.

Allie nodded, agreeing with the sentiment.

"Shame Amanda isn't here, she'd be all over it. Does anyone know where she's at?" Emma inquired, looking around the room but receiving nothing but shrugs.

Emma sighed, then went back to reading the seemingly gibberish text in the book. It definitely wasn't English, that was for sure. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to what each page contained, or meant for that matter.

“Sasha, do you know anything about this book, like what language it’s in?” she asked.

“Um… I have a lot of Eastern European lineage. Doesn’t look like Russian or anything I’ve seen before though… it’s like some kind of Runic language?” Sasha replied, just as puzzled.

“Hm. Well, it’s… neat, at least. Kind of sad we can’t try any cool spells… let me just…” Emma began to speak, before yelping in pain.

“Ouch!” she called out.

“What happened?” Michael asked with concern.

“Paper-cut. Shit that hurt… oh Sasha, I’m sorry… I got blood on your book…” Emma apologized, noticing the blotch of blood that had stained over one of the images on the page, some kind of pattern contained within a circle.

“It’s fine, honestly it makes it spookier!” Sasha giggled, before noticing something worrying.

“Uh, Emma, why is the book glowing purple?” she asked, pointing towards Emma with a pale face.

“Huh? Oh shit!” Emma yelled, jumping back from the book in surprise.

“What the hell? Is this a prank?” Allie asked nervously.

“I have no idea why it’s doing that… was it your blood?” Sasha pondered, her eyes widening as she noticed the sigil under the blood pulsating with a mesmerizing glow, the source of the book's mysterious illumination.

Emma's heart raced as she considered the possibility. "Maybe? Should I shut it?" she asked, her voice filled with urgency, her steps becoming more frantic as she paced back and forth.

"Yes! Shut it now before any other weird shit starts happening… oh my god Emma, your hair… it’s floating!" Michael exclaimed, rising from his chair and pointing at the mesmerizing sight above Emma's head.

Emma's hand reached out, her fingers trembling with determination, as she fought against the invisible force pushing back against her. The room seemed to hold its breath, the air thick with anticipation and an underlying sense of danger.

But just as Emma's fingertips grazed the edges of the book, a blinding burst of purple light erupted from its pages, illuminating the room with a dazzling brilliance. The sudden intensity of the light overwhelmed their senses, causing them to shield their eyes in reflexive instinct.

"What's happening?" Allie's voice trembled with fear as she fumbled in the blinding brightness, desperately trying to make sense of the chaotic events unfolding around her.

Michael, his voice filled with both concern and determination, reassured the group, "Just hold on! We'll figure this out!"

Emma's grip tightened on the book, her body bracing against the energy surging through the room. She could feel the force pulling her, resisting her attempts to regain control. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead as she strained against the repelling force, her muscles straining with the effort.

And then, as suddenly as it had begun, the beam of purple light ceased, leaving the room shrouded in darkness. The air grew still, the remnants of the blinding radiance fading into an eerie silence. The group cautiously lowered their hands, their eyes adjusting to the dim surroundings.

"Thank god…" Emma gasped, her breath coming in ragged gasps, as she leaned back against the wall, her heart pounding in her chest.

But their relief was short-lived.

In a breathtaking display of supernatural power, the ancient book erupted once more, its pages engulfed in a swirling sphere of vibrant purple light. The luminous sphere expanded rapidly, its ethereal glow filling every nook and cranny of the classroom, swallowing the consciousness of each club member one by one.

Silence settled over the room, broken only by the faint crackling of residual energy. As far as anyone could tell, at a first glance, the members of the Occult Club had vanished...
