That's why I'm glad I'm a stick-in-the-mud bachelor. Because it seems like once a husband and wife have kids, the former always get amnesia and break the teenage promise I'm sure they made never to become like their own parents. For instance; when teenagers demand respect from their parents, the latter tell them everyone has to earn it _before_ they get it. And, yet, when those same kids mouth off, those same parents become the ones demanding respect. Acting as if parents are an automatic exception to the previously stated life rule!*

In short: Adelaide is no doubt feeling that all Jim initially earned, by marrying her mom, is grudging tolerance. But, now that her mom has sided with Jim, against her, all Adelaide feels he's earned is...pure contempt.

*Which, btw, they are not. And, like most parents in such situations, they're confusing "respect' with "courtesy." Those two concepts being about as synonymous as "faith" and "trust."

Thanks for your comments.  You make some good points, and understand the story.  My interest is in creating a drama so the reader doesn't fall asleep while reading it... as well as I don't fall asleep while writing it.  Thanks again.
