Author's Chapter Notes:

Heading into the forests in search of a much needed escape from life, Emily finds herself lost.

An introduction chapter.

The hot summer sun trickled down through the trees on to the parked black Nissan as Emily sat with the door open, her feet sliding into her well-worn hiking boots before standing up. Walking around the side of the car, she opened the trunk, removing her trusty backpack.

Emily stood at 5 feet 6 inches tall with an athletic build shaped by hours of work on the treadmill. Her shoulder length blonde hair hung in a messy bun; she wore a simple khaki tank top and a lumberjack overshirt paired with faded blue denim shorts.

Emily had spent months buried in work, her weekdays blending together into a routine of early mornings, traffic, meetings, and late evenings. Even her weekends had become consumed by chores and errands, leaving her feeling restless and disconnected from the outdoors she had always loved.

One morning, determined to change that, she searched for somewhere she'd never explored before. Hidden among the hills was an ancient woodland nature reserve that seemed peaceful, quiet, and untouched by crowds. It was a long drive from home—but the photographs of towering trees and winding forest trails convinced her it would be worth every mile.

As the door slammed back shut, she took a moment to look around. The clearing she found in the forest was a long way from the main road. Her yearning for adventure and exploration leading her to drive further down the old trail than most would recommend. At twenty-five, she had spent enough weekends wandering woodland trails to know that no two walks were ever the same. Every forest had its own personality, and today she was eager to discover what this one had to offer. So, adjusting the straps on her rucksack, and hanging her map around her neck, she set off down the trail.

The morning sun filtered through the canopy in scattered beams, painting patches of gold across the winding dirt path as her boots crunched dead leaves and gravel with every step. Birds called to one another high above, while the gentle rustle of leaves drifted through the cool summer air. It was peaceful—the sort of silence that was never truly silent. Listening to the sounds of the birds, she made mental notes of the different voices, trying to remember the trademarks of different species.

The deeper she walked into the forest, the older it seemed to become. The sun nearly completely blocked out by the towering canopy as the twisted roots of the trees curled out of the ground like snakes. Vines climbing their way up the trunks towards whatever light they could reach high above.

After a couple of hours, she came across a fork in the path. A frown crossed her brow as she looked down on the map which showed a straight line at the point she assumed she was.

“huh… typical…”

She muttered to herself, sitting down on a decayed log to study the map and retrace her steps. As she slipped the bag off her back, she took the moment to have a drink, unaware that she was being watched...
