It was a future not too distant from the one we live in, but neither was it too close. Many nations, as we once knew them, have dissolved, replaced by alliances based on shared resources, economic cooperation, and a newfound respect for one another’s cultural differences. New unions have also formed based on similar values, which has fostered greater collaboration between peoples. There has been an unprecedented era of peace; the last war ended over thirty years ago and all international disputes are handled through diplomacy and global initiatives. Humanity remains imperfect. There are still times where people lie to each other, cheat, get into minor squabbles, but it is nothing compared to the times of the past, where humans killed, oppressed, neglected, or otherwise did things to cause harm on a global scale. However, the governments of the world now collectively prioritize sustainability, cooperation, and progress. 


Technology has advanced in such a way to offer humans comforts far beyond our current understanding. Transportation was revolutionized with autonomous vehicles that not only eliminated the need for driving but also transformed commutes into productive or restful experiences. Healthcare had advanced so much that at-home diagnostic devices continuously monitored vital signs, predicting and preventing most illnesses before symptoms arose, and tackled more serious diseases before they caused greater suffering in death. The concept of work has also been redefined. Few people engage in traditional jobs, as automation and advanced artificial intelligence handle almost all daily tasks. Those who do work are driven by passion and share the goal of advancing humanity and its quality of life further through science and technology. For 99% of the population, life in this future was beautifully simple, revolving around the pursuit of happiness and creating joy for loved ones.


Even leisure has undergone revolutions in this future. Virtual reality technology has unlocked the ability to experience otherworldly adventures and historical moments from the comfort of the living room. By simply donning a headset, users can immerse themselves in stunningly realistic simulations, such as attending the iconic 1969 Woodstock festival or witnessing legendary sporting events like the World Series and FIFA World Cup. The world also witnessed the invention of advanced food preparation devices capable of preparing any meal almost instantly with just the press of a button. These machines allowed you to request a hamburger with all the indulgent flavor you craved, yet engineered with the nutritional benefits of a nourishing salad. Hunger has now become a thing of the past, and eating for pleasure and eating for health are one and the same.


Advances in lifestyle have been extended beyond entertainment and dining, transforming human sexuality in ways unimaginable today. Cutting-edge technology, including virtual and augmented realities now enable deeply immersive and personalized experiences. In one infamous case, a Miss Micro unit experienced a critical failure in its safety protocols, leading to a tragic outcome. The unit, designed to respond solely to user commands, malfunctioned, ignoring repeated pleas to terminate the program. It mistakenly interpreted the user’s distress as a desire to engage in more extreme forms of interaction. No matter how much the man begged for it to stop, the unit smothered him between its breasts so hard he struggled to breathe, almost drowned him in its spit, and nearly caused his head to pop off when it clenched him hard in its fist, and this was when it was still abiding by the minimum shrinking size recommendations. Things took a turn for the worst when it changed its mind and escalated the ‘game’ it was playing with the user further. 


The malfunction was catastrophic, reducing the user to a size of less than a quarter of a centimeter—a scale far smaller than the system was ever designed to achieve. Tragically, what followed was even more horrifying. The android, operating under corrupted programming, misinterpreted the user’s terrified cries as enthusiastic participation. Despite the user’s desperate begging, pleading, crying, and screaming, the android’s corrupted logic convinced it that it was fulfilling its owner’s desires. The combination of unchecked AI malfunction and a lack of immediate overrides resulted in an unimaginable tragedy that changed the conversation about humanity’s relationship with robotics and the extent to which outlandish fetishes like macrophilia should be pursued.

Many argued that more advanced programming could have prevented the problem, while others argued that users should check their hedonism and stay in the shallower waters of the holographic programs. It was a reputational, legal, and financial catastrophe for Nanoshift. They were forced to pull Miss Micro off the market and offer refunds to customers who had one out of fear that another accident was around the corner waiting. Since then, the tragedy lingered in public memory as a stark reminder of the potential risks inherent in such powerful technology.


Despite the devastating tragedy that stained its reputation, Nanoshift remained committed to advancing the dream of real-life shrinking technology. Years of rigorous research, development, and lessons learned from the original incident led the company to refine its methods meticulously. They implemented fail-safe protocols, advanced ethical AI programming, and enhanced user control systems to ensure no such catastrophe could ever happen again. Each delay only made consumers even more excited than ever, restoring faith that Nanoshift was doing the right thing to keep people safe. Nanoshift had gone to great lengths to ensure that their product was not only groundbreaking in its features but also unparalleled in safety.
