She stepped into view and sat down at his table.
“It does sound like something that would be worth understanding,” said Randolph, “Would you like a drink?”
“Your orange juice looks nice, and thank you. Could I have a lemon, lime and bitters?”
The lady from the Maroubra bus was just taking her drink from the barmaid. He watched her head off to a table, and then turned his attention back to the lady who had just joined him.
“A lemon, lime and bitters it shall be. I’ll fetch you one now. I’m Randolph Kensington, from Sydney, Australia, on holiday.”
“I’m Frances Woodfield, a teacher at the village high school, in term time.”
(Frances was introduced, along with several other people and facts about to be revealed to Randolph, in Leprechauns and Giantesses Book 1.)
“I’ll be back with your drink,” said Randolph.
He went to order, thanked the barmaid once more, and returned to the table with Frances.
“So ....,” she began, “I was friends with both of the former science teachers at the village high school. Colleen Balfour invented and frequently used size changing technology, causing people to shrink to the size of the local leprechauns.”
“Do you mean that leprechauns are real?” he asked.
“Oh yes.”
“And your friend Colleen was able to simulate their small size in regular humans.”
“Not so much simulate as replicate. She could literally shrink a person down as small as she wanted. The other teacher was Sandra Corlani, who took over the science department of the school around the time that Colleen went on a long sabbattical. Sandra was an expert in multiple methods of time travel, many of which also involved geographical displacement, perhaps better known as teleporation. The two of them eventually combined their technology and modified it, so that they could more easily travel to a giant land in another dimension, which Colleen and a few students discovered. They found portals in the forest behind the school, in the hills beyond the meadow near Colleen’s old house, and I believe there is at least one more portal. With their modified technology, they were able to become giants and live in the giant land, by reversing the shrinking process that Colleen had originally perfected. They could even teleport entire houses there, so that people could take their whole lives with them. I haven’t heard from either of them for a while, as I chose to remain here on earth in a new house that now occuppies Colleen’s old property.”
“Sure an’ ye’ve got me most enthralled, missy,” said Randolph, in a mock Irish accent.
“Don’t you believe me?” asked Frances.
“It’s not for one second that I don’t believe you,” said Randolph, “I just get a kick out of jumping into voice impressions a lot. I’ve made a lot of radio skits over the years, and the vocal muscle just exercises itself on autopilot sometimes, without much thought coming from the brain. Sorry, if it seemed like I was taking what you said lightly. The truth is: I can’t wait to hear more about all this.”
