Oh god I have so many theories, ranging from "Maia is a social experiment" to "Maia was sexually abused and ostracized from her community" to "Maia was forced to mother all of humankind as she knows it". Mind you, I also have theories where all three of these theories interlock in some way. I can't take the suspense!
