I wonder how they will ever get back. I'm wondering; surely a lot of people will be in debt if they are constantly betting and battling for the sake of the economy. For every winner there has to be a looser. So it does seem rather odd but I will read on regardless because your story is actually ratehr well written, except for a couple of minor things which really aren't that important.
