It's quite a curious thing in this scenario, honestly. In this particular world, Ollie likely does have things as best as someone afflicted by this disease could: He has a loving person that's invested not just in a continued life for him, but in providing a comfortable life for him - granted that Kaylie also expects a small amount of returned affections, but he's also not abused in any real sense, not by Kaylie or even her sorority sisters. Of course, the real negative is that Ollie himself has 0 agency in his position in the world - to the point where, as he's found the love of his life, he has to depend on that lover to make the case for possession of him. He makes no case for himself, in fact saying not a word, and instinctively performs in a manner that Kaylie enjoys.His life isn't really his. And in a way, that might be more painful than any potential mistreatment that he could have been faced with had his owner been less kind. Psychologically, anyway.

Wow, I absolutely loved it. This is a wonderful one shot. So much life building in a short story, I connected to the characters very deeply.
I am such a huge fan of this new trend of short scenes in a shrinking world.
