Next chapter: "The Road to Lindale" (starring Jacob Hope, Bing Sanders, and Samantha Lamour). Rated PG-13!
I'm sorry. But, with all that talk about "hope" and "bad one-liners," I just couldn't resist. LOL!
Author's Response:
heh

This is my favorite chapter in a while! I love the downtime, and Pyrra really stole this chapter for me...That mama cat thing with the little kids was so adorable! And somewhere in the back of my mind I picture the horrible things Pyrra would have done to those SAME kids had she still been with the Society.
Though, now I'm wondering if Pyrra is beginning to instrinsically learn what "right" and "wrong" is. If Sanders commanded her to kill the kids and Samantha, would she do it without question?
Great chapter, this is a favorite of mine for sure! These kinds of chapters really add depth and color to the universe you created while also putting powerful characters into "normal" everyday situations which is something I'm a huge fan of.
Author's Response:
Well...less horrible things and more horrible thing...ie eating them. Cause that is what she would have done. And maybe she is starting to learn some morality, or maybe Sanders is just rubbing off on her. And, honestly, she probably would.
Thanks, and yeah I like throwing Pyrrha or Flonne or whoever into situations that are generally normal stuff, yet complicated by their size.

A lot of character development in this chapter, I liked it a lot. Now we know why Jacob isn’t a good solider. I really don’t know how I feel about this guy anymore. He can never be in a position of leadership. If Tiffany knew what he did, she’d probably straight up kill him.
I also like the development of Pyrrha and you do a good job emoting her even though she can’t talk.
Author's Response:
Oh Tiffany would kill him in a heartbeat if she heard about it, no questions asked. Do in front of Derek too if needed. Jacob is supposed to be a rather complex character who makes for a hard person to full fault, yet cause problems.
I will admit, I didn't think writing for Pyrrha would be as fun as she is turning out to be. She might replace Gabby as my favorite character to write.

I liked the chapter, it was a nice change of pace to get some character development without people dying left and right. Basically I'm happy for the bit of calm we got although knowing you, it could be gone in an instant!
Anyway, I also noticed that Samantha and Pyrra are becoming good friends. I think its really funny how Pyrra seems to understand what everyone's talking about and even throws in her 2 cents (with meows of course), into the conversations.
Good stuff!
Author's Response:
You are right to suspect that. If I feel its needed, calm will be smashed apart faster than you can say GIANTESS.
Those two do seem to be getting close really quick like. Kinda ironic that Sanders and Jacob don't get along but their two "girls" so to speak, are. And I actually enjoy the hell out of writing for Pyrrha. Its actally really fun to write her talking without actually talking.
Thanks.

With all due respect to Samantha, sometimes boys HAVE to be boys. Because, once testosterone comes to a full boil, it will _not_ simmer down on voice command alone. And, that's the sad-but-true fact, Jack!

@ Kazuma: morality may be not be black-and-white. But, neither is it a uniform gray. It's more like multiple shades of gray...with some shades undeniably darker than others. And, with all due respect to what the Phoenixes go through on a daily basis in their world? They're still just perpetuating a vicious circle of horrid cruelty! And, if they're not careful, they'll become the monsters of Nietzschean philosophy (i.e., worse than the ones they fight).

Holy crap, well I guess the phoenixes being the defacto "good guys" goes out the window. Both groups of resistance member groups were trying to screw eachother over.
How are they supposed to fight an group as organized as the Society, not to mention with much better technology + gts's, when they're all split up into smaller groups like this?
Things aren't looking good for shrunken humanity if THIS is the best they can offer.
Author's Response:
Yep. Their better than the Society but are not exactly "good".
And indeed, things do look grim.

@Zanderas
I know the kind of world they live in but I don’t have to like their methods. The chapter made me uncomfortable reading it. You get all the praise for that. I’m not complaining or anything lol
To think I said there wasn’t enough grey in early Act 1.
Author's Response:
Ahh I see. Good, cause you were supposed to be unconfortable. This chapter was meant to show the Phoenixes are not paragons of goodness.
And there will be plenty of grey in this story.

Lol is the title chapter supposed to be an oxymoron?
This chapter showed that the phoenixes are just as barbarous as the society in their methods, not exactly the best hope for shrunken mankind. Tiffany reminded me of pre-giantess Aviel a bit except she’s far more of a stone cold bitch.
Author's Response:
Yes.
Tiffany kinda is supposed to remind you of her. That said, do remember the kind of world the Phoenixes are in. It was pretty much either kill the Snakes or die themselves. Yes their methods are horrid and cruel, but they live in a horrid and cruel world where many of them could die at any moment. Tiffany lost her entire squad and second squad in this chapter.

Those poor Snakes! It would appear that Darius doesn't subscribe to the theory that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

Is that the beginning of a new character arc I sense? Perhaps Samantha will grow into the new Lindsey.

Ah Jacob you still can’t see beyond your own issues. He better wake up before he ends up being a detriment to the whole squad.
As for Aviel, I hoped she was playing some sort of long con but the more I thought about it the more I realized she’s pretty much been a society zealot from day one and seemed to agree with the society’s more unethical practices just to fight the resistance. This is really a natural progression of her character.
Author's Response:
We can hope Sanders and Samantha will slap some sense into him. Failing that, Pyrrha might have an "accident" with him, She has made it pretty clear she doesn't care for him.
Yeah she never did take too kindly to Sanders questioning the Society or every have any sympathy for the Resistance.

Awesome way to tie this story to last. Id say by this point there shouldn't be doubt as to whether or not Aviel is corrupted. She betrayed them, and maybe their wasnt any doubt in her mind when she first joined their ranks as to what sacrifices shed have to make to attain power.
Author's Response:
Thanks. Aviel has been rather clear she was all about getting her revenge.
Date: May 19 2014 12:22 PM Title: Chapter 11: New Allies, Old Friends, New Threats
Great chapter! Nice way to slip Aviel back in. In the interest of wanting to see more giantess interaction maybe someday down the line, the Resistance can get its hands on a shrink ray. Assuming (hopefully) it only works on women, it'd be nice to see characters like Samantha giant sized. Maybe a tactic (eventually), infiltrate a Society facility shrunk, grow, do lots of damage and shrink for the escape. Wishful thinking I suppose, but I think a variation of that could be possible in the distance future. Rating of 10!
Author's Response:
Thanks. I suppose I can let slip that we will see giantess Resistance at some point, but that is all I am going to say on that. How it happens and such I will leave to your imaginiation.

You know, at the rate he's going, Jacob's going to get himself killed before he learns whatever Samantha et al. meant (in chapter 2) when they said he knows nothing about being a _real_ soldier.

@Carycomic: I like your use of the word 'pyrrhic'.

Epic fight and Sanders grows as a character. Nice chapter all around.
Author's Response:
thanks

Whoa! Pyrrhic victories are such a downer.
Author's Response:
Oh hoho I get it.

You already know how fanboy I am about your stories...
I loved the battle scene, it was descriptive and well thought out. Pyrra seems to be getting funnier and more likable with each chapter, and she is really becoming a great character in her own right! That bit where she chanted along with mews along with the crew was cute and hilarious! And Sanders is also developing as a three dimensional character.
My only complaint so far is the lack of distinct resistance personalities...I dont know none of them have "caught on" with me yet except Lindsay and you killed her off already...Maybe some down-time would help, you know: no immediate threat, some Pyrra/resistance member interractions would be fun, maybe some kinkyness with her and Sanders?
It would also liven the mood a bit, this story is depressing as fuck sometimes...its greatest strength for sure but it wouldnt hurt to soften the blow a little with some lightheartedness.
Just some suggestions...
Author's Response:
Yeah I have noticed that too. However things have been moving too fast and generally been too hectic to get any real characterizations in of many of the Resistance guys. Thankfully, though, things are going to calm down now and guess what next chapter is all about?
Date: May 03 2014 10:42 AM Title: Chapter 9: Welcome to the Resistance
Cool chapter but man nobody is safe now in this story it seems…
Jacob last chapter and Sanders this chapter. While Jacob can be sort of sympathized with, Sanders doesn’t get that luxury because what he did was incredibly stupid. I almost face palmed in real life. Did he really think they were not going to twist the truth about what happened? He can’t afford to be this naïve. He got Lindsey, one of the more interesting resistance members, killed for no good reason. Even if her death served to motivate Sanders it shouldn’t have happened in the first place and that is what makes it tragic. The resistance is going to blame him for her death and thus make it harder for them to trust him. Lindsey was really the only one on his side.
Author's Response:
Indeed, they are not. I will admit to toying with offing Sanders once to twice as well, so I would expect anyone and everyone to die if I were you.
Yeah what he did was stupid, but we all make mistakes. Some are bigger than others to be sure, and Sanders was a HUGE one, but maybe he will learn from it and be better for it.
Also, the fact it seemed to bug you so much and make you right out that big long review is exactly why I did. The best stories are tragic.
