Too much "magic".

Superman and superwoman didn't have majical powers - although they might have seemed so to many mere mortals. They were born of extraterestrials - under a green sun, and all that. The special powers they had on Earth sounded very scientific and plausible in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.
