The thing about this scenario is if the author isn't responding and hasn't touched it in over a year it's good as gone, if someone wants to build on it I would try to get a reply from the author, if they don't respond I'd work the envelope to avoid plagiarism by writing a "sequel" and not copy/paste the original story, you just describe that this builds on x story, face it folks, when an author abandons a good story, it sucks, and the emptiness left may inspire some to take up the pen and build on it, this is one of the highest honors an author can get.

Thank you for telling me this. I honestly didn't think, not that it happens much anyway, about plagirism. I was just looking for a springboard to assist me in releiving tension.
