Right off the back, I have a feeling that matter substitutes generally draw from those near death to prevent time paradoxes.  Dawn and Jessica's unique sizes, not to mention one is the unconceived daughter of the other, is what caused the problem.  Otherwise time travel, if it can be figured out by a young genius, would have destroyed the universe many times over by now.

Well the reason why here Jessica is here was given in the main story if I am not mistaken but everything else here is a mystery and it will be explained in future chapters.
