To paraphrase an old Buddhist legend: is Timothy a normal-sized boy dreaming that's he a shrunken boy, half-reluctant to be eaten? Or vice-versa?

Author's Response:

The absence of explanation is what drives this for a while, but I half explain things according to theories developed by some of the characters themselves, as time goes on. Watch for later chapter hints at this.
