Fantastic Story, I love the characters, the world building, the conflict, the arcs, everything.  I love the multiple stories, and the romance doesn't feel forced.

Author's Response:

Thanks, this particular story probably has more "moving parts" than any other one I've attempted, and also has the largest cast so far I think, it also had the most preparation before writing in terms of outlining and stuff. I'm glad it all paid off!

Ok, really stupid in setting physics question that something else you said makes me want to ask, if someone gets shrunk by an already shrunken shrink ray and then regrown with a full size shrink ray would he end up at bigger than their original full size? Since it's regrowing them at a scale that's larger than the original shrunken shrink ray used to shrink them and would be using to regrow them?

For example lets say a human is shrunk by his Zetan girlfriend who he had already shrunk to blowjob height earlier, then he's regrown with his own shrink ray that was left on the table after she finished playing with him instead of the already tiny one she shrank him with.

Yes this is incredibly autistic I know but I can't help but to think about the actual mechanics whenever stories get enough world building for there to potentially be an actual answer to how everything works.

Author's Response:

No it's cool I get the same way lol, it's flattering to have someone who likes the story enough to ask these kinds of questions. Anyways you can't be "restored" to more than your original height, you might say that your mass is going "somewhere else," and you're pulling it back when you regrow, the shrinking tech's limitations are basically on the power of the individual device to do it, smaller device after being shrunk = smaller output, hence the inability of a shrunken shrink ray to properly restore you completely.

Overall though they break reality in a ton of different ways, so it's a fair question.

@Greenanon Some more content fleshing out Warren and Deandra’s relationship will be great to see. Loved the dynamic between those two in their brief appearances in One Year Lease.

Chapters featuring Amber or Charles and his wife would also be great to see

Author's Response:

I've got a couple in mind, Warren and Deandra are definitely getting one though.

Tradition!!!!! 100th review! I loved this story so freaking much, btw.

Author's Response:

You got the 100th review again, congrats lol. Glad you liked it.

Oh, and a possible and interesting side story is, due to the Cephalos incursion ruining all the hyper-lanes, some cruse ship got stranded after a bad or emergency jump, so the crew and passengers shrunk to save on food and air. And for the years of drifting, or actual travel time to get back to known space to be saves, the made a town or two within the ship, like all my easier talk of using a full ecosystem in a cargo hold and having a micro colony. Only maybe a little bigger, could totally depend.

Or some other civilization shrunk themselves to the mansion’s size or smaller so they could hid from the Cephalos in an ultra shielded container or facility, or even so re terraformed their planet with the shrunk life. Fun offshoot potential stories, and hopefully with enough erotica potential.

Author's Response:

The setting has infinite potential, there are probably ships full of shrunken people out there somewhere.

I'd think that the Zetan military would've seen the transmission from Nea and Kurt too, so it doesn't really fit that the human office of propaganda would be able to just stop it from being seen. Especially by the Royal family who'd probably be ecstatic to see Nea rallying humans and Zetans together like this and denouncing the coup attempt, still doesn't make up for the shit she caused but it might make them less eager to throw her and an entire planet to the squids. Also it's kind of shocking that the human propaganda office is even able to censor much in the first place even on the earth side, keeping shit quiet forever doesn't really work with the internet involved.

Author's Response:

The Zetans have similar censorship networks, and yeah it's impossible to keep it contained, but they only need to keep it hidden from the public at large, and even then only for a little while, the Director says as much. Consider that they ban the war atrocity footage too, Kurt and Joey said they saw it back in Chapter 1, but it's far from common public discourse.

With your answer to Kessler’s questions on the shrink rays, why not have a shrink ray shrink a box of shrink rays, one is removed from the box to shrink the box, then don agains all the way down. I can guess its the whole process that make its hard to use this method for more efficiency, since a step smaller should be the normal amount of energy. Unless there are setups like this somewhere for something.

Actually comes back to thinking that someone would shrink a shrink ray so they could have it, or multiple, in a gauntlet or gloves, for hiding and to make things even smaller.

Maybe some theorized or ultra experimental one have several ‘pulses’ of shrinking in it, ones that only activate after being use, meaning also having been shrunk, so make the step-down process in one firing of sone ray. At best probably in a lab somewhere.

And what about shrink pads/booths/chambers? Put the thing in the machine  and its shrunk.

Anyway, your doing great, then its the finally and epilogue!

Author's Response:

Shrink rays come in a number of different shapes and sizes I'm sure, most of the military ones are shaped like military equipment, think Nea's rifle from way back in chapter 2, vs the civilian ones Kira and most Zetans carry day to day which are shaped like remotes. I'm sure if a person wants a gauntlet shaped one it can be done, as well as a chamber sized one but it would require more energy. I suppose a single person could in theory get a box of shrink rays and make themselves smaller in a sequence, but it would have fairly limited practical use. The cannon Jolene has is special because it reduces a very large area to a super tiny size, the biggest ones outside commonly in use are probably for shipping, think reducing cargo containers to brick size.

Thank you for replying and answering my questions.

Also to clarify at the end, I meant Kurt in the full wild outfit after celebration with Nea sighing and giving him a look for a lot of it(and devising a punishment for him). Because Smith would listen. But Kurt, well it depends on if he feels like it. And I have a feeling that he would get a kick out of dressing like a biker/metalhead at a fancy Zetan event.

Author's Response: Kurt would do that, knowing full well a "punishment" of epic proportions was coming, that said many Zetans aren't super aware of Earth fashion and might not immediately realize they were being teased by his outfit, most of them like their bodyguards to wear Zetan clothes and humans kind of do in Rome as the Romans on the issue, with the royal family's black suited secret service agents being a notable exception.

It's been 40 years since the alliance and there are translation implants common enough that humans who want nothing to do with the Zetans have them. So why isn't anyone selling implants that just have the regrowth function from a shrink ray but installed into the body so they can just regrow themselves immediately if shrunk? That seems like an obvious money maker and an extremely helpful safety precaution for humans who either like or hate the Zetrans to avoid accidental or intentional crushing respectively.

Author's Response:

Translation implants are popular because they work on human languages too, Kurt and Joey probably got theirs thinking they'd be great for Spanish, not Zetan.

An anti-shrinking implant wouldn't work becuase shrink rays can only bring you back up to the "scale" that they're at, like if you shrink to two inches tall holding one and it shrinks with you that ray will only return people to two inches tall until it is itself resized.

Oh.

Someone so made a control setup to pilot power armour like a mecha. Possibly, say,  a large control ball with life the life support system the person goes into and is then shrunk to fit in some tiny armoured black box spot deep inside. (besides the actual attempts at making mechs, grav and scifi materials and all).

Whoch then made me realize the power armour based sex androids that have been made. And all the size related stuff. Probably one of the few legal ways to truly abuse and toy with shrunken things, besides VR.

Author's Response: Big war mechs are probably a novelty in this setting, Zetans and humans both like their tanks, fighters, and starships. Still, I'm sure there are recreational uses of power armor technology, for those who can afford it anyway.

Makes sense about the mass usage (besides the expense) of shrinking to decrease resources would not be popular idea. The robot tabletop farm could still go, needs only some simpler terraforming shelf/table terraforming to make work and get a good amount of shrunken seeds without needing more shrink ray. Then unshrink  the food. So there probably some labs working on that specific thing in the background, and when everyone’s the tech will be there. And maybe shrink ray tech in general, for science and tech’s sake and no other reason. Maybe there some proposed plan somewhere for an emergency shrink storage to save the civilization, not that implementing it would have been a priority or method liked.

Fair about the armour compensating itself for the balance and posture. What kinds of things would Jolene want but hasn’t been able to get so far, both for practical and fashion.

Wonder what would be considered truly ridiculous for the power armour fashion circles.

And I probably should have said it in an earlier review, but you did a great job giving Jolene a cowgirl/old-west ascent without even accessing the spelling and grammar, somehow. Thats just an achievement.

Author's Response:

Power armor for the military is probably sleek and professional, same for law enforcement. Jolene's power armor is built slim because she wears it under her clothing a lot, it's comparatively pretty weak to more professional models, but it works well for what she does. Armors worn by royalty and rich people probably look like something out of Fire Emblem, huge obnoxious shoulder pads and capes included.

I'm glad Jolene's accent translates well, apart from a few select instances I don't like to lay it on too thick, mostly it's her choice of slang (to the point where Zetan translation software gets confused) and fashion that hopefully tells the reader what she probably sounds like.

Sorry for clogging the reviews by the way.

Could talk on the discord server.

It's fine, I don't really use discord so you can just toss ideas in the reviews

Other shrunken comparison, since the crumbs worked (this shrink tech does break so many bits of reality) for eating at that size, would shrunken seeds and plats use normal dirt. Then a whole biosphere could be made in a room at the scale of the mansion (or terrarium), use normal nano or microdots to harvest and process (like wood for lumber), and use some other nanites that or some other performing tech (possibly also shrunk) to accelerate growth.

And why stop at table top or a small room. Cargo ships are cheep, relatively. similar maybe abandoned station or asteroid outposts.

Or otherwise just use to make food. Kiloacres of land from selves, smaller water usage, just a few bags of fertilizer, more controlled environment, all in a small warehouse, feed tens of thousands at the bare minimum. Have animals and insects too, like bees. It has to at least be used by some preper or ultra isolated types, or was at least considered by the gov to feed everyone. Whatever reasons for not if its didn’t.

Author's Response:

Shrinking bigger stuff requires more power, more advanced equipment, etc, the cannon Jolene had was a specialized piece of military equipment for example. Another thing to consider is that given the history with the shrink rays, a lot of people just don't want to be shrunk, like they fought a huge war with the Zetans to get to stay full sized having the government say "let's all shrink to end world hunger!" wouldn't go over well. The existence of additional planets to settle has taken a lot of the resource pressure off Earth anyway, that said yeah there's almost certainly a prepper colony somewhere in a shoebox with a sustained ecosystem.

INB4 chap.

Depending on how the party goes, Jolene’s crew could go and get the other yachts and spacecraft on the docs, get more evidence of Zeta forever, sell for more money, maybe a souvenir or two for her desk or quarters, or obviously use in some of the ‘activities’ with her crew.

But thats gong to be a lot of money from selling all those other yachts.

Author's Response:

Jolene's already cleaning up, the most valuable assets are the prisoners themselves.

Unity, unity must be our watchword. You know that you cannot be free and slave at the same time. Simon Bolivar.

Zeta Forever... they are too crazy. If they achieve their goal, the Cephalos will destroy them. They will be like the unwitting avengers of the human race. It is a good example of what fanaticism can entail

Author's Response: Zeta Forever would tell you they'll just enslave those humans and use them as cannon fodder against the squids, a task which they believe would be easy because as Zetans they're so naturally superior to weak and cowardly humans. Would it work? Not a chance in hell, and definitely not in time to turn around and fight the squids.

Some Zetan had to have gotten an enter town or village and made them rebuild (unless they actually got the whole town). And the whole owning-an-ant-hill like situation. So Jolene probably can find one of those and all accessories.

She’ll get an tier up in devotion from her Zetans from that, won’t she.

And also, this island party will probably net her tons if fancy cloths from the leftovers. She already took an expensive ship, why stop there.

Author's Response:

Yeah she'll have lots of nice things lol

Yessssssssss, another chapter. I also wanted to asked a setting question. Did human build their starships by reverse engineering Zetan designs, or were they gifted as part of the original alliance treaty?

Author's Response:

Humans were gifted a lot of technology as part of the alliance, and Zetans helped humans build their own space industry from scratch. Accordingly most, if not all, of human starships are Zetan based, though with a few small changes here and there.

Oh this is so amazingly great!!! I'm completely in love with it and hooked on the story and characters. And what fantastic worldbuilding! You've got the Ursula le Guin touch. :)

Author's Response:

Thanks, I've only read a little bit of Le Guin, but she definitely does a good job making you wonder what's beyond the "window" into the world you're looking through, I try to do that too.

The Idea is quite good but but the race is kinda bad for this.

Smelly 7+ foot  orks with elven ears don't quite work for me. Would be better to see 4 foot unaging girls with extremely high dexterity, experience and intelligence. It would kinda make sense for them to have high advanced technology and cooperate with humans when they aren't brave enough or something like this. This would have a lot of possibilities for reverse play.

Author's Response:

I like amazons, in particular the idea that even when you're full size you're never bigger than them is kind of fun. That said there will be some reversal type stuff with our human bounty hunter character and her Zetan hangers on.
